A solemn function was organised on 10th March 2024 at the historic Chatham Memorial to mark the anniversary of the arrival of the first batch of freedom fighters at Port Blair. The event, attended by Islanders and dignitaries alike, was dedicated to paying homage to the heroes of the First War of Independence.

Leading the tribute was Mr. Keshav Chandra, IAS, Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Administration. In a poignant ceremony, Mr. Chandra laid a wreath at the memorial, symbolising the profound respect held for the freedom fighters who sacrificed for the nation’s independence. Joining him were senior officers of the A&N Administration, members of the Local Born Association, longstanding residents of the islands, and other attendees, all offering floral tributes at the memorial site.

The significance of March 10 lies in its commemoration of the arrival of the First Batch of Freedom Fighters in 1857 to these Islands. The event was meticulously organised by the Directorate of Art & Culture, underlining the importance of remembering and honouring the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s freedom.

The solemn ceremony at the Chatham Memorial serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience displayed by the freedom fighters, inspiring generations to cherish and uphold the values they stood for.
