In a bid to ensure seamless voting processes and uphold the standards of democratic practice, Mr. Arjun Sharma, IAS, the Returning Officer for the Andaman and Nicobar Parliamentary Constituency, led a team of election officials to conduct a pre-revision exercise at a challenging Polling Station located in Badakhari, Rutland Island.

The visit aimed to verify the Polling Station’s physical infrastructure and assess the provision of Assured Minimum Facilities, crucial for facilitating smooth electoral procedures. Badakhari Polling Station, identified as one of the difficult-to-reach locations within the constituency, warranted meticulous attention to ensure accessibility and functionality during elections.

During the inspection, Mr. Sharma meticulously examined various aspects, including the layout and physical condition of the building, provision of amenities such as ramps, drinking water facilities, adequate furniture, proper lighting, and electricity. Additionally, provisions for essential services like help desks, signages, and gender-segregated toilets with running water were scrutinised to ensure optimal election management.

Engaging with the local community, the Returning Officer interacted with voters residing in the vicinity of the Polling Station, disseminating information about the measures undertaken to ensure a free and fair electoral process. This interaction served to reinforce transparency and instill confidence among the electorate regarding the electoral procedures.

The visit underscored the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting elections with integrity and inclusivity, particularly in challenging terrains like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. By conducting thorough assessments and engaging with the local populace, election officials strive to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure every eligible voter’s participation in the electoral process.
