Public Holiday Declared on April 19 (Poll Day) in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

In light of the upcoming General Election for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Parliamentary Constituency, scheduled to take place on April 19, 2024 (Friday), the Election Commission of India has released the official election schedule via Press Note No.ECI/PN/23/2024 and No.ECI/PN/24/2024, both dated March 16, 2024. 

In adherence to the directives laid out by the Election Commission of India and in exercise of the powers bestowed by Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881, read with MHA’s Notification No.2/6/57-J dated December 17, 1957, and pursuant to Section 135B of the Representation of People Act, 1951, in concurrence with the letter No.78/EPS.2024 dated March 16, 2024, issued by the Election Commission of India, the Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has declared that April 19, 2024 (Friday), the day of the poll, shall be observed as a public holiday for all Public Offices, Local Bodies, and Educational Institutions across the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. 

Furthermore, in a move to ensure the participation of all citizens in the democratic process, it has been mandated that April 19, 2024, will also be a paid holiday for all Commercial Establishments and Undertakings within the jurisdiction of the UT of A&N Islands.

This decision underscores the commitment to facilitating a smooth electoral process and encouraging maximum participation from all sections of society. By providing adequate time and opportunity for individuals to exercise their right to vote, authorities aim to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure a fair and inclusive election process.

With this declaration, residents of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are urged to mark their calendars and actively participate in shaping the future of their constituency by exercising their voting rights on April 19, 2024.
