The residents of Nancowry Group of Islands are facing a lot of inconvenience because of non availability of Speed Boat. It is being reported that the Speed Boat which was in service at Nancowry Group of Islands have been withdrawn for some reason by the Directorate of Shipping Services.

The Speed Boat used to facilitate travel between Kamorta, Katchal, Chowra and Teressa. It was the only mode of travel between the Islands except for the Helicopter Service which serves a very limited number of people.

The Speed Boat was also used to transport passengers who disembark at Nancowry from ship to reach other Islands like Katchal, Chowra and Teressa. The withdrawal of the service because of non-availability of the Speed Boat is causing several hardships for the local population.

The residents of the Nancowry group are also facing hardships because of non-availability of functional ferry boats. It is being reported that two ferry boats used to serve the residents of the region but both the boats have developed technical problems and are no longer in service.

It is also being reported that the students of the region couldn’t attend their schools for at-least two days because of non-availability of ferry services.

Nicobar Times spoke to Aslam Majid, First Captain of Kamorta who informed us that the residents are facing several issued because of non-availability of Speed Boat and functional ferries. He further added that one of the ferry boat is under repair after spare parts were sent from Port Blair by the Directorate of Shipping Services and is expected to be pressed into service as soon as the repair works are completed.
