Right to Information (RTI) is a very important and useful tool for the common man. It is important for the Government and the Administration to ensure that obtaining information from departments is made easy. Online RTI Application Portal enhances access to information and streamlines the entire process for citizens.
With the Revenue Department having already embraced online RTI applications in 2023 through eDistrict Portal, demands are mounting for all departments to follow suit, facilitating a smoother and more efficient means for citizens to exercise their rights.
While several states across the country have successfully adopted online RTI application portals, Andaman and Nicobar Islands still rely predominantly on manual filing processes. This disparity underscores the need for a unified online platform accessible across all departments of the administration, enabling citizens to request information seamlessly, regardless of their location within the archipelago.
Proponents of the initiative highlight numerous benefits that an online RTI portal would offer. Firstly, it would empower citizens by eliminating the need for physically submitting applications at government offices or sending it through post, particularly advantageous for those residing in remote areas. It would also eliminate most expense incurred by the departments on postage and would make the process much faster. In cases where certified copies of documents are required, an online payment service for document photocopying could be introduced which would further streamline the process, sparing citizens the inconvenience of in-person transactions.
Transitioning to an online RTI system would not only enhance convenience for citizens but also improve efficiency and transparency within government departments. By digitising the application process, authorities can better manage incoming requests, leading to faster responses and greater accountability.
The time is ripe to embrace technological advancements and replace outdated manual procedures with a more accessible and efficient online RTI portal. By doing so, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands can uphold the principles of transparency and accountability while empowering citizens to engage more effectively with their government.
