Two local residents of Bambooka Island, Nicobar District, were arrested for providing logistical support to Myanmarese poachers. The arrests follow the apprehension of eight Myanmarese poachers near Bambooka Island on August 17, 2024.
The foreign poachers, who were taken into custody under the Foreigners Act, 1946, are currently under investigation by the Crime and Economic Offence Police Station of the Andaman and Nicobar Police. During their interrogation, they disclosed that some residents of Bambooka Island had met with them and supplied logistical aid in exchange for certain gratifications.
As the investigation progressed, the police recovered multiple items provided by the poachers from two individuals identified as Robinson Vinod (33) and Ronald (37), both residents of Bambooka Island. A police team led by Sub-Inspector Parvash, along with Constables Amos George and Amit Singh, executed the arrests. Authorities are now pursuing further leads to uncover any additional connections in the case.
This incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by foreign poachers within Indian waters, particularly in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where valuable marine resources are at risk. Additionally, the presence of foreign nationals in these waters raises significant national security concerns.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and refrain from providing any form of assistance to foreign poachers. Such actions not only undermine the region’s marine ecosystem but also endanger national security. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or sightings of foreign intruders—whether at sea or on land—to the nearest police station, the Police Control Room (03192-232100), or Coast Guard authorities.
With this arrest, law enforcement agencies in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands continue their efforts to crack down on poaching activities and safeguard both local resources and national security.
