Training Program on Vermicomposting Held at Car Nicobar

The ICAR-KVK CIARI Nicobar organized a five-day training program titled “Vermicomposting and its Importance in Sustainable Agriculture” at Perka, Car Nicobar, under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) initiative. The event commenced with an inaugural ceremony attended by Mr. Paul David, the first captain of Perka village, who served as the chief guest.

In his address, Mr. David highlighted the significance of organic farming practices and their lasting impact on the Nicobar region, urging participants to embrace sustainable methods to enhance agricultural productivity. Dr. Santhosh Kumar, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Nicobar, reinforced this message by emphasizing the importance of community participation and collaboration in fostering a conducive environment for large-scale vermicomposting production.

The training program attracted a total of 30 farmers eager to learn about vermicomposting techniques that can be implemented in their backyards. Mr. Sanketh G.D., a Subject Matter Specialist, conducted a series of technical sessions covering essential topics such as the requirements and processes involved in vermicomposting, types of earthworms, and the benefits of vermiwash. 

Additional lectures were delivered by experts including Mr. Deepoo Meena, Mr. Ajmal, and Dr. Akshay, who contributed valuable insights into the subject. Interactive discussions were crucial in addressing the unique challenges faced by farmers in rural island settings. Practical demonstrations were also conducted, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience.

The training program was organized under the guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for all attendees. This initiative reflects a commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the Nicobar Islands, paving the way for a greener future.
