As the nation celebrates Deepawali, also known as the festival of lights, a heartfelt appeal has been made to citizens by A.S.P.S. Raviprakash, IAS, Secretary (Science and Technology) and Chairman of the Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC). Emphasizing the importance of caution and responsibility, Mr. Raviprakash urged everyone to ensure a safe and pollution-free celebration this festive season.
“Deepawali is a time of light, joy, and happiness,” he stated, “but it must also be celebrated with due caution to prevent it from becoming a festival of noise and fire hazards.” Highlighting the risk of accidents, fire incidents, and pollution, Mr. Raviprakash advised that the festival be observed with mindfulness toward safety and environmental impact.
The Secretary called on residents to avoid setting off firecrackers, especially in sensitive and prohibited zones, which include hospitals, educational institutions, places of worship, petrol stations, and public roads. He emphasized that fireworks should only be ignited within the government-recommended time frame, from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, to help reduce the impact of noise and air pollution.
He further noted that public cooperation in adhering to these guidelines would be crucial in allowing all citizens to enjoy Deepawali peacefully. “Your cooperation is essential to enable your fellow citizens to celebrate the festival with joy and happiness,” Mr. Raviprakash remarked, calling upon the public to honour the true spirit of the festival by prioritising safety and community well-being.
The ANPCC chairman concluded his appeal with warm wishes for a prosperous and joyful Deepawali for all.
