In a commendable initiative to foster sports among the youth and steer them away from negative influences, the District Administration of South Andaman, led by Deputy Commissioner Mr. Arjun Sharma, IAS, organised the first-ever DC Cup Chess Tournament 2024. The tournament, held exclusively for young players at Hotel Dolphin Resort, aimed to provide a platform for Under-11 and Under-19 boys and girls to showcase their chess skills and sportsmanship.
The event was graced by Mr. Firoz Alam, SDPO of Swaraj Dweep, who served as the chief guest. He made the ceremonial first move on the top board against Ms. Jagtap Kalyani Rajendra, Director of Fisheries, A & N Administration, officially inaugurating the tournament. In his address, Mr. Alam encouraged the young players to actively participate in sports, emphasizing the importance of resilience, discipline, and teamwork in building character and personal growth.
The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from 65 players, reflecting the vibrant interest in chess within the community. This event marks a significant milestone for Swaraj Dweep, underlining the District Administration’s commitment to promoting sports among the youth. The success of the DC Cup Chess Tournament was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Assistant Commissioner’s Office, Swaraj Dweep, whose invaluable support was crucial in ensuring the event’s success, according to a press release from the Deputy Commissioner.
