In a recent communication to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has emphasised the urgent need to convene meetings of the Administrator’s Advisory Council (AAC) and the State Plan Board (SPB). Mr. Ray highlighted the lack of structured discussions and deliberations within the territory, leading to a disconnect between the elected body and the Administration.
The MP pointed out that historically, the Lieutenant Governors of the Islands would chair annual meetings of both the AAC and SPB. These meetings facilitated important discussions on major developmental projects funded through the Union Territory’s budget grants. Furthermore, the AAC provided a platform for stakeholders to voice their concerns and offer suggestions, ensuring that welfare measures were aligned with the needs and aspirations of the local population. However, in recent years, such meetings have not been convened, leading to a breakdown in structured communication.
Addressing the current challenges faced by the Islanders, Mr. Ray noted that critical issues such as inadequate drinking water supply, frequent electricity disruptions, poor healthcare facilities, deteriorating road infrastructure, reduced development funds for local bodies, and stunted economic growth have persisted. These ongoing problems, he said, reflect the absence of timely interventions and lack of coordination between the Administration and the elected representatives.
In light of these pressing concerns, the MP has called on the LG to take immediate action and convene the AAC and SPB meetings at the earliest. He stressed that such meetings would provide an opportunity for meaningful discussions and collaborative decision-making, ultimately ensuring more inclusive and participatory governance for the betterment of the Islanders.
