In a proactive effort to raise awareness about the importance of wetland conservation ahead of World Wetland Day 2025, Andaman Law College, under the leadership of Dr. S. Jayakumar, Principal (i/c), collaborated with the Department of Environment & Forests, Sri Vijaya Puram, to organize ‘Save Wetlands Campaign -2025‘. The event, held recently as a precursor to the global observance on February 2nd, saw enthusiastic participation from students, staff, and local volunteers.

The campaign began with an address by Mr. Shivendra, Range Officer, who spoke about the ecological significance of wetlands and the pressing issue of plastic pollution. This was followed by the participants taking the Wetland-Mitra Pledge, committing themselves to the cause of wetland conservation.

Participants were divided into two groups for the day’s activities. One group conducted an awareness drive in the Sippighat area, engaging with local communities, distributing pamphlets, and sensitising residents about effective waste management practices. The second group undertook a waste collection drive, supported by officials and Gram Panchayat volunteers, to clean the area and mitigate pollution.

The collective effort resulted in a cleaner Sippighat and increased awareness among locals about the critical need to protect wetlands. Dr. Jayakumar expressed his gratitude to the Department of Environment & Forests and the Gram Panchayat for their collaboration, emphasising that wetlands are vital for ecological balance and require urgent attention.

The ‘Save Wetlands Campaign-2025’ sets the stage for the global celebration of World Wetland Day, reminding everyone of the significance of preserving these crucial ecosystems for future generations.
