Battery Theft Reported from Chakkargaon Telecom Tower, FIR Lodged

A case of theft has been reported at a telecom tower in Chakkargaon, South Andaman, prompting an investigation by the Aberdeen Police.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Manager-Operations at Indus Towers Limited, multiple battery cells were stolen from the company’s telecom tower located at C-75, Ward No-17, near Sai Baba Mandir, Chakkargaon. The theft allegedly occurred in two separate instances—between December 25-28, 2024 four battery cells were stolen, and between January 8-11, 2025 three battery cells were stolen—resulting in a total loss of seven battery cells, valued at approximately ₹35,000.

The matter came to light during a routine site inspection by the company’s technician, following which a formal complaint was lodged with the police. Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Indus Towers Limited, a major telecom infrastructure provider, plays a crucial role in maintaining mobile connectivity in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The company has urged authorities to take swift action.

This incident highlights ongoing security challenges faced by telecom infrastructure providers, as battery thefts from mobile towers have been a recurring issue across the country.
