Government Employee Posted at Campbell Bay Duped in Cyber Fraud, Loses ₹6.57 Lakh

A government employee posted at Campbell Bay has fallen victim to a cyber fraud, resulting in a loss of ₹6.57 lakh. The incident occurred on November 28, 2024, when the victim received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number claiming to represent Punjab National Bank (PNB).

The fraudster, posing as a PNB official, instructed the victim to install a mobile application through a link shared on WhatsApp. Shortly after installing the app, the victim received a video call offering assistance in setting up the PNB mobile app.

Within minutes, the victim noticed several unauthorized transactions from his bank account. Four transactions were made:

  1. ₹4,00,000 at 2:53 PM
  2. ₹99,000 at 3:10 PM
  3. ₹99,000 at 4:11 PM
  4. ₹59,000 at 5:54 PM

The total amount siphoned off was ₹6.57 lakh. Upon realizing the fraud, the victim immediately reported the matter to the Campbell Bay Police Station. A formal complaint was also filed on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) with the help of SHO PS Campbell Bay on the same day. The victim’s bank account and debit card were promptly blocked to prevent further losses.

The Cyber Crime Police Station has registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 on 5th of February 2025.

The victim has requested the authorities to take swift action to restore the funds and bring the perpetrators to justice.
