The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has undertaken a significant initiative to support the traditional livestock-rearing practices of the tribal community in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Under the Poultry, Piggery, and Goat Development Scheme, the department recently distributed pigs and backyard poultry from the Government Poultry Farm in Campbell Bay to the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar on a 100% subsidy. The distribution was carried out in the presence of the Block Development Officer (BDO), Campbell Bay, and the In-Charge of the Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS).

In an earlier outreach effort in February 2025, the department extended its services to Trinket Bay and Lawful Bay, providing animal healthcare and veterinary services to the Shompen community. Backyard poultry birds were also distributed during the visit, and awareness sessions on good animal husbandry practices were conducted to help the tribe improve livestock management.
