The ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram, is set to open its much-anticipated Agro Eco Walk at the Sippighat and Garacharma farms for the general public starting April 21, 2025. This initiative offers a rare opportunity for residents and tourists alike to immerse themselves in the Islands’ agricultural richness while promoting sustainable farming and biodiversity conservation.

The Agro Eco Walk aims to blend education with recreation, showcasing ICAR-CIARI’s ongoing efforts in agri-research, conservation, and community outreach.

Sippighat Farm Highlights: Visitors to the Sippighat Farm can explore spice-based plantations and take in the natural beauty of the landscape. The World Coconut Germplasm Centre, which conserves a diverse collection of coconut varieties from around the globe, is among the key attractions. The Spice Processing Unit offers insights into post-harvest technologies and value addition, while the Mangrove Viewpoint presents a stunning glimpse of the island’s fragile coastal ecosystems. Fresh, locally grown produce will also be available for purchase at the Farm Sale Point.

Garacharma Farm Attractions: The Garacharma Farm features the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Ayurvatika, a tranquil garden of medicinal and aromatic plants dedicated to the former President. The unique Nakshatra Garden combines botany and astrology by showcasing plants linked to the 27 celestial constellations. A horticulture nursery rich in rare and native plant species, an ornamental fish breeding unit, exotic fancy birds, and a relaxing fish spa make it an ideal destination for families, students, and nature lovers.

The Agro Eco Walk will be open Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entry tickets can be purchased at the Sale Points located at each farm.

By opening its gates to the public, ICAR-CIARI hopes to foster greater awareness about the region’s agro-biodiversity and scientific farming practices, while offering an engaging and educational experience for all.
