In a bid to ensure fair practices in public transportation and improve commuter experience, the Andaman and Nicobar Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to report instances where auto-rickshaw drivers refuse to ply by the fare meter or deny rides.

Taking to their official handle on X (formerly Twitter), the department encouraged the public to record video evidence of such violations and share it via WhatsApp on 9531892228. “Your support is crucial, such offences can only be prosecuted with your help. Let’s work together for better transport,” the message read.

The initiative aims to curb the growing number of complaints from passengers facing harassment or being overcharged by certain auto drivers, particularly in urban areas like Sri Vijaya Puram.

Officials have reiterated that refusal to ply by meter or denying a ride are punishable offences under the Motor Vehicles Act. However, enforcement becomes challenging without concrete evidence, making citizen participation vital.

This move is part of a broader campaign to make local transport systems more accountable, transparent, and commuter-friendly across the islands.
