The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Andaman and Nicobar Islands, observed Black Day at the State Karyalaya, Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Bhawan, Sri Vijaya Puram, to mark the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in 1975—widely regarded as a dark chapter in India’s democratic journey.
The observance began with a compelling video presentation that portrayed the suppression of civil liberties during the Emergency. The film highlighted the suspension of fundamental rights, curtailment of press freedom, and widespread silencing of dissent, offering a poignant reminder of the era’s authoritarian excesses and the bravery of those who opposed them.
An exhibition was also organized as part of the event, featuring rare photographs, archival materials, and personal narratives of individuals who resisted the Emergency. The display resonated strongly with attendees, shedding light on the hardships faced by democracy defenders and their unyielding resolve.
Mrs. Sampa Banerjee, State Co-Incharge and State President of the BJP Mahila Morcha, anchored the programme.
Mr. M. Vinod, State Vice President and Incharge of the Black Day programme, delivered the welcome address, underscoring the significance of the day.
In his presidential address, Mr. Ajoy Bairagi, State President, BJP A&N Islands, emphasized the importance of remembering the Emergency as a lesson in democratic resilience. He reaffirmed the party’s steadfast commitment to protecting democratic ideals and institutions.
Dr. R. Devdas, State Co-Incharge and State Secretary, extended the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to participants and highlighting the importance of passing on these historical reflections to future generations.
The event saw the presence of senior BJP leaders including Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh and Mrs. Sheela Singh (State Vice Presidents), Mr. K. Ram Das (State General Secretary), Dr. R. Devdas and Mrs. Sampa Banerjee (State Co-Incharges), along with other office bearers, district and mandal leaders, and numerous party karyakartas.
