The Transport Department has issued a public advisory reminding all vehicle owners about the mandatory requirement of third-party motor insurance as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The advisory highlights the legal obligation under Section 146 of the Act, which prohibits the use of motor vehicles in public places without a valid insurance policy.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has reiterated that uninsured vehicles pose significant risks not only to the owners but also to other road users in the event of accidents or damage. To address this concern, the Ministry has emphasized strict enforcement of the insurance mandate.

Under Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, driving an uninsured vehicle—or allowing someone else to do so—is a punishable offence. The penalties include imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of ₹2,000 for the first offence, and ₹4,000 for subsequent offences. In some cases, both imprisonment and fine may be imposed.

Given the legal provisions and safety implications, the general public has been strongly advised to ensure their vehicles are covered by a valid insurance policy at all times. Authorities have warned that violators will face stringent action as per the law.
