Angshuman Roy, State Youth President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has written to the Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration, urging immediate action to resolve the escalating parking crisis at GB Pant Hospital, Sri Vijaya Puram.

In his representation, Roy highlighted the severe shortage of parking space at the hospital, which he said has led to daily chaos and inconvenience for patients, attendants, and hospital staff. “The existing parking infrastructure is grossly inadequate to handle the volume of vehicles arriving at the hospital each day,” he stated.

Due to the overflow of vehicles, adjoining roads—including the busy Cellular Jail Road—often become congested, obstructing ambulance movement and compromising emergency response times. Many patients and their families are forced to park as far as Netaji Stadium or the seafront and return to the hospital via auto-rickshaws, adding both physical and financial strain during already stressful situations.

Roy also pointed out that the hospital staff face difficulty in accessing the hospital premises during peak hours, which directly impacts timely healthcare delivery.

To address this pressing issue, Roy proposed the immediate construction of a multi-level parking facility on the existing hospital parking site. He suggested that a structure with three or more levels could accommodate over 300 vehicles, ensure dedicated emergency lanes, and reduce congestion around critical junctions such as Jail Junction.

He further appealed to the Administration to:

  1. Conduct a feasibility study for the proposed multi-level parking facility;
  2. Allocate budgetary provisions for the project in the upcoming infrastructure plan;
  3. Form a joint oversight committee comprising hospital authorities, PWD officials, and traffic police for smooth implementation.

Describing the situation as a matter of public safety and dignity, Roy called for urgent administrative intervention to ensure uninterrupted healthcare access and civic convenience.

A copy of the representation has also been forwarded to the Member of Parliament, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
