The District Administration, in collaboration with the ICDS Project Rangat, organised a comprehensive awareness programme on the national initiative ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ at the Anganwadi Centre, Rest Camp, Mayabunder, on Friday. The event aimed at promoting gender equality, celebrating the girl child, and encouraging community participation.

Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman, Ms. Nandini Maharaj, IAS, joined local officials, ICDS functionaries, and community members in a day-long series of activities focused on the empowerment of girls.

A skit performed by Anganwadi Workers captivated the audience with a strong message on the importance of protecting and educating the girl child. The performance shed light on the challenges faced by girls in society and emphasized the role of the present generation in bringing about change.

As part of the programme, the Children’s Park attached to the Anganwadi Centre was redeveloped with age-appropriate play zones, creating a safe and healthy environment for mothers and children.

A symbolic plantation drive was also conducted, during which the Deputy Commissioner and dignitaries planted saplings, representing the community’s collective commitment to nurturing the growth and future of every girl child.

To further reinforce the campaign’s message, a signature campaign was launched, inviting participants to pledge their support for ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.’ The initiative drew strong participation from men, women, and youth alike.

Adding to the day’s activities, a special food mela was organised, showcasing nutritious food items essential for child health and development. The mela also served as an educational platform for mothers and expecting parents on maternal and infant nutrition.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner commended the efforts of Anganwadi workers, acknowledging their pivotal role in driving social change at the grassroots level.
