During his maiden visit to Little Andaman last week, Mr. Anil Kumar Tiwari, State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was approached by several organisations and individuals who raised the demand for immediate reopening of stone quarries on the island.

The delegations highlighted that due to the non-availability of stone quarry products for several months, developmental works in both government and private sectors have come to a standstill. They pointed out that although sufficient funds are available with Panchayats and other agencies, the execution of projects has been halted in the absence of essential construction materials.

According to the locals, quarries earmarked in Little Andaman for use by APWD, Panchayats, and private operators remain non-functional, resulting in a total halt of construction and developmental activities.

Taking cognizance of the issue, Mr. Tiwari wrote to the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, requesting immediate steps for reopening all available quarries to ensure the smooth supply of stone materials required for infrastructure works.

Responding to the request, the Deputy Commissioner assured the BJP State President that the process of reopening the quarries would be expedited and completed at the earliest.

Expressing gratitude, Mr. Tiwari thanked the Deputy Commissioner for his prompt and sensitive response to what he described as a “burning issue” affecting the development of Little Andaman.
