World Coconut Day Celebrated at Car Nicobar with Enthusiastic Participation

The Zonal Agriculture Team, Car Nicobar, celebrated World Coconut Day 2025 on 2nd September 2025, at the Multipurpose Farm, Perka, on the theme “Uncovering Coconut’s Power, Inspiring Global Action.” The event was graced by Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, Mr. Satnam Singh, IAS, as the chief guest, with Mr. John Chrysostem, Second Headman of Perka Village, as guest of honour. Ms. Tripti Kalhans, IAS (P), Car Nicobar, also attended the programme.

In his address, the Deputy Commissioner congratulated the people of Nicobars, particularly the tribal communities, for their rich coconut cultivation tradition, highlighting its religious, economic, and health significance. Subject matter specialists from CIARI-KVK and officials of the Agriculture Department spoke on topics including technological innovations, cultivation practices, and value addition in coconut farming.

Welcoming the gathering, Mr. C. Vinod Kumar, Assistant Director (Soil), emphasized the vital role of coconut in the daily lives of tribal communities and urged participants to make full use of government schemes related to cultivation, value addition, and post-harvest technologies.

To mark the occasion, farmers actively participated in competitions such as coconut recipe displays, handicrafts, value-added coconut products, and coconut de-husking. An interaction session between line department officials and farmers was also held. Around 30 farmers from different villages took part in the event, which concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners.
