Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) inaugurated the fortnight-long ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – 2025’ initiative on Wednesday with a solemn ceremony in front of the National Memorial Cellular Jail. The programme began with the administration of the Swachhata Pledge by SVPMC Chairperson, Mr. Shahul Hameed.

The event was attended by dignitaries including Mr. Neeraj Bharti, IAS, Secretary (UD), A&N Administration; Mr. Azharuddin Zahiruddin Quazi, IAS, Secretary, SVPMC; Ms. D. Radhika, Senior Vice Chairperson, Councillors, officials and staff of SVPMC, along with enthusiastic participation from the general public. A signature campaign was also launched to reaffirm citizens’ collective commitment to hygiene, sanitation, and a sustainable environment.

As part of the inaugural programme, dignitaries planted saplings at Veer Savarkar Park under the nationwide campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, highlighting the importance of trees in environmental conservation. This was followed by a mass cleanliness drive from Clock Tower to Cellular Jail and its surroundings, showcasing the resolve of civic leaders and residents to lead by example in maintaining public spaces.

On the occasion, the Chairperson and Secretary of SVPMC urged citizens to refrain from throwing garbage in the open and instead hand it over to Safai Mitras in a segregated form, thereby supporting the Council’s mission for a cleaner and healthier city.

The SVPMC has planned a series of activities and awareness programmes from September 17 to October 2, 2025, engaging citizens, institutions, and community groups in building a clean, green, and sustainable Sri Vijaya Puram.
