A newly constructed Transit Hostel at Kamorta Island was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar, Mr. Amit Kale, IAS, in a ceremony held on 24th September 2025.
The inaugural event was attended by Mr. Aditya Sangotra, Assistant Commissioner, Nancowry; Mr. Charles Jacob, Chairperson, Tribal Council Kamorta; and Ms. Aysha Majid, Chairperson, Tribal Council Nancowry.
The 25-room (50-bedded) hostel has been developed as a major infrastructure boost for the Nancowry Group of Islands. It is aimed at providing temporary accommodation to government employees posted at Kamorta, as well as students and residents traveling from neighbouring islands such as Katchal, Teressa, and Chowra.
In addition, the facility will also serve as a much-needed shelter for attendants of patients from remote villages like Kakana, Upper Katchal, Banderkadi, Pilpillow, and Daring, who often travel long distances for medical treatment.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of the hostel in bridging logistical challenges and ensuring the welfare of tribal communities. Leaders of the Tribal Councils expressed their gratitude, noting that the facility would play a vital role in improving connectivity and support across the islands. (Story Based on PR)
