In a landmark verdict, the Hon’ble Special Judge, Sri Vijaya Puram, Mr. Neyaz Alam, sentenced Sanjib Mondal, a resident of Nayagaon, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for committing aggravated penetrative sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl. The brutal crime resulted in the victim’s pregnancy, highlighting the severe betrayal of trust by the accused.
The case came to light when the victim visited a hospital for a medical check-up, where her pregnancy was detected. Following this, Police Station Aberdeen registered FIR No. 156/2023 dated 14 June 2023 under Sections 5(j)(ii)(l)(n)/6 of the POCSO Act. The investigation was led by SI P. Jeevan under the supervision of then SHO Girish Kumar.
During the trial, the prosecution examined 15 witnesses, and DNA evidence conclusively established the guilt of the accused. After careful consideration of the evidence, the court delivered a stringent sentence:
- 20 years rigorous imprisonment under Sections 5/6 of the POCSO Act, along with a fine of Rs. 10,000, and an additional 3 months imprisonment in default of payment.
- 2 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 506 of the IPC, with a fine of Rs. 5,000, and an additional 6 months imprisonment in default of payment.
The court emphasized the gravity of the offence, noting that the convict had grossly abused a position of trust, leaving the young victim both physically and emotionally scarred. Additionally, the court directed a compensation of Rs. 3,00,000 for the survivor to support her rehabilitation and future welfare.
Special Public Prosecutor Miss A.S. Zinu effectively conducted the case on behalf of the State.
This verdict reinforces the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice for children subjected to sexual abuse and sends a strong message that crimes against minors will attract the severest punishment, serving both justice and societal deterrence.
