Awareness Programme on Natural Farming Held at Sundergarh Panchayat in Middle Andaman

The Department of Agriculture, Rangat, organised an awareness programme on Natural Farming under the National Mission on Natural Farming at Sundergarh Panchayat recently, covering a cluster of 125 farmers from Bejoygarh and Adazig villages.

Dr. Jitender Singh, Director (IC), Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi, and Additional Nodal Officer for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, graced the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Singh expressed satisfaction over the effective implementation of natural farming initiatives in the Islands. He stressed that the value of agricultural produce can be significantly enhanced through proper certification and by establishing strong market linkages, which he described as the need of the hour. During his interaction with farmers, he also reviewed the benefits being availed under various centrally sponsored schemes.

Earlier, Ms. Shirly Thomas, Assistant Director (Agriculture), welcomed the chief guest and participants, and explained the objectives of the programme, highlighting the importance of natural farming in protecting the planet and moving towards a more sustainable future.

Mr. Vijoy Mondal, Up-Pramukh, elaborated on the long-term benefits of natural farming, emphasizing its role in improving soil health, reducing input costs and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Ms. Taramani Minj, Up-Pradhan, Sundergarh Gram Panchayat, also expressed support for the promotion of natural farming in the region.

Mr. C. Murugan, Agriculture Field Assistant, provided a detailed explanation on maintaining soil fertility through natural farming practices, sustainable nutrient management and various schemes related to soil conservation.

The programme witnessed active participation from Krishi Sakhi Ms. Birshi Kumari and Farmer Master Trainer Ms. Geeta Mondal, along with farmers from the surrounding villages.
