The Port Blair City Area Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Sunday launched a week-long campaign in the urban areas of Sri Vijaya Puram, beginning from the Haddo area.
As part of the campaign, a group of CPI(M) leaders and party workers visited interior areas of Ward No. 2 and held street-corner meetings to interact with residents. The delegation included CPI(M) State Secretary D. Ayyappan, Port Blair City Area Committee Secretary P. Sathyapal, SOC Member S. P. Kalairajan, Haddo Branch Secretary K. G. Samkutty, and party members K. Lakshman, E. Rudraiah and Sada David, among others.
During the meetings, CPI(M) leaders highlighted issues related to civic amenities and alleged shortcomings in municipal services. They raised concerns over the condition of municipal roads, sanitation, footpaths and water supply in the town. The speakers also referred to issues such as power supply, unemployment and price rise in the islands.
In addition, the leaders expressed their views on changes to employment-related schemes, including the replacement of MGNREGA with the VBGRAMG scheme.
According to the party, residents in the area responded positively to the outreach programme. The campaign will continue in other parts of the town over the coming days, CPI(M) informed.
