The Kalighat Police on 20th January 2026, busted an illicit liquor brewing operation in the dense forest area near Talbagan village and destroyed over 1,000 litres of fermented wash (lahan) during a special operation.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs about illegal liquor brewing ahead of the forthcoming Laxmi Narayan Mela, a police team from Police Station Kalighat was mobilised under the supervision of the Station House Officer. The team conducted an extensive search operation in the forest area, covering nearly five square kilometres over a period of about five to six hours.
During the operation, police detected two concealed brewing sites deep inside the forest. From the first location, around 465 litres of lahan stored in iron tins, plastic gallons and buckets were recovered. At the second site, approximately 560 litres of lahan were found stored in similar containers. In total, about 1,025 litres of illicit lahan were recovered.
No individuals were found at either location, and no claimant came forward. As per legal procedure, the entire quantity of lahan along with the storage containers was destroyed on the spot after completing necessary documentation.
The Forest Department has been informed and requested to keep enhanced surveillance in and around the forest area to prevent recurrence of such illegal activities.
Police have appealed to the general public to share any information related to crime or illegal activities with the nearest police station or through emergency numbers 100, 112, or 03192-273344. The identity of informers will be kept confidential, police said.
