A tragic road accident claimed the life of a scooty rider near the sand yard close to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Garacharma on Tuesday evening.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at Pahargaon Police Station, the incident occurred at around 4:30 pm when an STS bus was travelling on the Aberdeen Bazaar–Jirkatang route. The scooty rider, who was originally from Ghaziabad, was proceeding towards a servicing centre in the Garacharma direction when the bus allegedly struck the two-wheeler from behind.
The impact caused the rider to lose balance and fall onto the road. He reportedly slipped under the bus and sustained fatal injuries, dying on the spot. A police personnel travelling on the bus informed Pahargaon Police Station about the incident, following which emergency services and police personnel rushed to the scene. However, the rider had already succumbed to his injuries immediately after the accident.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Motor Vehicles Act, including provisions related to causing death by negligence and rash and negligent driving, against the STS bus driver.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and the need for strict adherence to traffic norms, particularly on busy stretches.
