In a significant move to recognise experience, merit and long years of dedicated service, the Andaman & Nicobar Police have announced the introduction of Special Grade designations for Constables and Head Constables.

Under the new decision, eligible Constables who have completed 15 years of service along with the 1st Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) have been granted the designation of Head Constable (Special Grade). Similarly, eligible Head Constables who have completed 25 years of service, including a minimum of five years as Head Constable with 1st and 2nd MACP and requisite vigilance clearance, have been upgraded to the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspector (Special Grade).

Police officials stated that this long-awaited milestone has been achieved after a gap of seven years since 2018, made possible through the sustained efforts of the Police leadership to ensure career progression and morale enhancement within the force.

In this connection, a pipping ceremony was held at the Police Headquarters on January 29, 2026, presided over by Mr. Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. During the ceremony, five police personnel were conferred with Special Grade ranks. This included two Head Constables who were designated as Assistant Sub-Inspector (Special Grade) and three Constables, including two Lady Constables, who were designated as Head Constable (Special Grade).

The initiative is expected to boost motivation among the ranks and reinforce the force’s commitment to recognising dedication and exemplary service.
