A case of cyber fraud involving ₹1.63 lakh has been registered at Campbell Bay Police Station after an employee of the Military Engineer Services (MES) was allegedly cheated through a malicious mobile application shared on a WhatsApp group.

According to the FIR (No. 0005/2026) registered on February 17, 2026 under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the complainant, who works with the Military Engineer Services (MES), stated that on the day of the incident, while he was at his residence in ALHW Colony, Campbell Bay, he was browsing a WhatsApp group named “MES Industrial Employees,” comprising around 220 members from across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

A group member allegedly uploaded an application titled “RTO e-Challan” in the group. Believing it to be genuine, the victim downloaded and installed the application. After installation, the app reportedly sought various permissions, which were provided by the complainant .

Soon thereafter, the complainant noticed that his phone calls were being automatically forwarded to an unknown number. Despite removing the call-forwarding settings, the calls were reportedly redirected again. Within minutes, he began receiving multiple OTP messages and a notification regarding the addition of a beneficiary to his SBI account.

When he attempted to access his YONO SBI app to remove the beneficiary, he was unable to log in. He immediately contacted SBI customer care, where he was advised to block his account. However, before preventive measures could be effectively implemented, a total amount of ₹1,63,000 was fraudulently debited from his two SBI accounts.

As per the complaint, ₹54,000 was deducted from one account and ₹1,09,000 from another.

The victim subsequently lodged a complaint with SBI and later approached the police station, where he registered his complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
