The Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife), Mayabunder, recently held a special felicitation ceremony to honour three Daily Rated Mazdoors (DRMs) — Saw Sakari, Saw Thomas and Saw Manashe — for their extraordinary bravery and selfless service following the recent helicopter ditching in sea near Parrot Island.
At the time of the incident, the trio was on their way to the Interview Island Protection Camp to carry out their assigned duties. Upon witnessing the emergency, they immediately abandoned their routine movement and rushed towards the site, emerging as the primary responders at the scene.
Displaying exceptional courage and presence of mind, the three DRMs undertook a high-risk rescue effort and assisted in evacuating all passengers from the aircraft, including an infant. Their swift action and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way ensured that those on board were brought to safety.
During the felicitation function, the DFO (Wildlife) expressed deep appreciation for their prompt response and dedication, stating that their bravery and disregard for personal safety had played a crucial role in saving lives. As a mark of recognition, a cash reward of ₹6,000 was presented to each of the three DRMs.
The ceremony served as a reminder of the invaluable contribution of frontline forest personnel, highlighting how ordinary individuals rose to the occasion and proved to be true “helping hands” in a moment of crisis.
