The Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has launched a 10-day ‘Zero Leakage Campaign’ across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from February 25, 2026, aimed at minimizing water loss, strengthening efficient water management practices, and generating public awareness on the importance of preventing water wastage.

As part of the campaign, APWD has constituted dedicated teams to carry out comprehensive inspections of the entire water supply pipeline network across the Islands. The teams are undertaking systematic checks to detect leakages and ensure prompt repair and rectification to prevent further loss of water.

The department is implementing several key measures to enhance the effectiveness of the initiative. These include systematic operation and optimization of regulatory valves within the distribution system, along with regular cleaning to ensure smooth water flow and reduce leakages. Vulnerability assessments are also being conducted to identify weak points in the pipeline network, particularly at joints, off-takes, and regulatory valves. An inventory of such vulnerable locations is being maintained to facilitate periodic inspection and timely maintenance.

Recognizing the importance of community participation, the campaign also emphasizes reducing domestic-level leakages. Citizens are being encouraged to repair dripping taps, faulty toilet flush systems, and overflowing water tanks, besides promoting the reuse of water wherever possible.

Educational institutions are being roped in through awareness programmes designed to teach students about water budgeting, including assessment of total water requirements, actual consumption, and identification of additional needs at household and institutional levels.

Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities are being conducted in schools, Anganwadi centres, and other community platforms to promote sustainable water conservation practices. Meetings of Pani Samitis and Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) are also being convened to strengthen community participation and collective responsibility. The District Water and Sanitation Mission meetings have also been conducted in all three districts in support of the campaign.

Through these coordinated efforts, APWD aims to foster a culture of water conservation and ensure sustainable water management across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Members of the public have been advised to report any water leakage in supply lines to the concerned APWD office or through the helpline number 231179.
