In a significant step towards strengthening professional policing and capacity building in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Police Training School (PTS) at Prothrapur was formally renamed and inaugurated as the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute at a ceremony held at the Conference Hall of Lok Niwas on Thursday.

The institute was inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Admiral D. K. Joshi (Retd.), who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Islands Development Agency.

The event was attended by Chief Secretary Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, Director General of Police Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, senior officers of the A&N Administration and Police Department, along with other distinguished guests.

Renaming the institution after freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is seen as a tribute to his indomitable spirit, leadership and dedication to national service. The institute is expected to function as a premier centre for professional police training in the Islands, aimed at nurturing a disciplined, modern and service-oriented police force.

Currently, the institution provides basic training to newly recruited constables and technical personnel. With the upgradation of infrastructure and optimal utilisation of resources within the Andaman and Nicobar Police, the institute will now expand its mandate to include training for newly recruited Sub-Inspectors and promotional courses for personnel promoted to the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspectors.

The institute will also conduct practical and refresher training programmes for officers of the DANIPS serving with the Andaman and Nicobar Police, as well as for probationers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) undergoing field attachment in the Islands. Officials said this initiative would place the institute among the leading police training centres in the country while strengthening the professional capabilities of the force.

The campus is equipped with modern training facilities including smart classrooms, computer and language laboratories, a well-stocked library, a modern gymnasium, a firing range, a firearm training simulator, expansive parade and sports grounds, and separate residential barracks for male and female trainees. These facilities are expected to enable advanced, technology-driven and practical training aligned with contemporary policing requirements.

Over the years, the Police Training School has earned several accolades, including the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Training and the Lieutenant Governor’s Commendation Disc. Several trainers from the institution have also received the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Training, reflecting the high standards of instruction and dedication of the training staff.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the ADGP (Law & Order).

Officials said the establishment of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute marks a new milestone in the evolution of policing in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reinforcing the commitment to build a professional, technologically advanced and people-centric police force.
