A comprehensive two-day training programme on “Scientific Rearing and Management of Dairy Cattle” was organised under the Extension Reform scheme (UTATMA) from March 6 to 7 at the Veterinary Hospital, Campbell Bay, under Govind Nagar Panchayat in Great Nicobar.

The programme aimed to equip local dairy farmers with modern scientific knowledge and practical skills necessary to improve cattle productivity under the challenging island conditions of Great Nicobar.

During the training, participants were provided with detailed insights into several key aspects of dairy farming, including selection of suitable cattle breeds for tropical island environments, balanced nutrition and feeding practices, preventive health care measures, scientific housing and shelter management, reproductive health management, and techniques for value addition of milk and dairy products.

Resource persons from the department conducted both theoretical sessions and practical demonstrations to ensure that farmers could effectively apply the knowledge in their day-to-day dairy farming activities. The sessions also addressed common challenges faced by dairy farmers in remote island areas such as feed scarcity, disease management and issues related to market linkages.

The initiative reflects the continued efforts of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to strengthen livestock extension services and empower rural communities through capacity-building programmes. The training was designed to promote sustainable dairy farming practices aimed at improving milk production, enhancing farmers’ income and contributing to the nutritional security of the region.

Farmers who participated in the programme expressed satisfaction with the training and requested the department to organise similar programmes in the future on advanced dairy farming techniques.
