Canara Bank on 18th June 2022 organised the inaugural function of the campaign for ‘Digital Onboarding of Fishermen/Fisherwomen’ at Fisheries Training Centre, Dignabad. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration.
9 Fish Vendors were issued their UPI QR Code for accepting digital payments.
Director of Fisheries was the Chief Guest of the occasion. Mr. S U Maheswar Rao, Member of Governing Body, National Fisheries Development Board was also present on the occasion.
Mr. Rahul Ranjan, Regional Manager – Canara Bank, Regional Office – Kolkata III was also present during the occasion.
Bringing fish vendors on board the digital payment ecosystem will not only benefit them but will also ease the lives of the buyers.
The businesses in the Islands did not adopt Unified Payment Interface for a long time due to the connectivity issues, but now the Mobile Internet connectivity in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is almost at par with that of mainland India and UPI will only grow.
A sizeable number of shops and small street vendors across Port Blair now accept UPI Payments. UPI payments are now also accepted in villages of the Islands. A little handholding from institutions will ensure that businesses will adopt UPI without fear.
