Port Blair, Nov 14 2020
Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee has installed equipments to monitor the Ambient Noise and Air Quality this Diwali Festival at Port Blair. Nicobar Times saw one such installation at Dollygunj Near Shiv Mandir. The board at the site mentioned that the monitoring will be conducted between 10th of November to 23rd of November 2020.
More such equipments must have been installed at various other places in Port Blair and beyond but that couldn’t be confirmed as the Official Website of Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee dstpcc.andaman.gov.in was down and we could not get any of their contact numbers to verify.
The installation however made us dig deeper into the machinery deployed by APPCC. The equipment which was installed at the site in Dollygunj included a Envirotech APM 460. The APM 460 is used for routine monitoring of PM 10 in the ambient air. The respirable particulate matter can be measured accurately using this equipment.
The results which come out of this monitoring will be interesting as it will tell us the changes in the quality of the air we breathe in Port Blair, before the Diwali festival, during the Diwali festival and days after the Diwali festival.
Such monitoring should be regularly conducted and their results should be made available publicly on the internet, so that everyone should be able to see and analyse the affect of our actions on the environment around us.
