Seminar on Drug De-Addiction Organized to Raise Awareness and Offer Support

As part of the weeklong celebration of International Drug De-Addiction, a seminar was held at the PBMC auditorium, aimed at raising awareness and providing support to those affected by substance abuse. The event saw the participation of esteemed guests, including Ms. Veditha Reddy, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, who served as the chief guest.

Addressing the audience, Ms. Veditha Reddy emphasized the importance of regularly organizing such programs at educational institutions and Gram Panchayats. She urged individuals struggling with substance abuse to take advantage of the counselling and treatment facilities provided by the Integrated Rehabilitation Center for Addicts (IRCA) in South Andaman. Comparing addiction treatment to seeking medical help for physical ailments, she encouraged individuals to come forward and seek the necessary support.

Ms. Pallavi Sarkar, IAS, Secretary of Social Welfare, South Andaman, stressed the significance of maintaining confidentiality regarding the treatment of addicts and providing information about drug peddlers to the authorities. Mr. Anand Vardhan Mishra, Assistant Commissioner (HQ), shed light on the role of parents in preventing substance abuse among children.

The seminar featured various speakers, including Dr. Kushal Baidya, Assistant Professor at ANIIMS, who highlighted the adverse effects of substance abuse on society, families, and the physical health of addicts. Shri Binoy Mathur, DySP of Narcotics Andaman and Nicobar Police, discussed the legal aspects surrounding the misuse of narcotic drugs.

Adding a creative touch to the event, a team of performers from IRBn presented a street play (nukkad natak), focusing on the negative impact of narcotics on family life. The NGO ISMAT also participated in the program and shared insights into their efforts to prevent drug abuse among children. The seminar attracted a large number of attendees, showcasing the community’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.

Dr. MK Mahato, the Medical Officer (I/C) representing IRCA in South Andaman, extended a warm welcome to the gathering. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Akash Saojal, a Peer Educator from IRCA, South Andaman, expressing gratitude to all participants and contributors.

The seminar served as a crucial platform for spreading awareness, fostering understanding, and promoting support networks to combat the challenges associated with substance abuse in the region.
