On August 5, 2023, a crucial review meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Mr. Keshav Chandra, IAS, to assess the progress of various tourism developmental initiatives and ongoing projects in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The meeting, held in the Conference Hall of the Secretariat, aimed to reinforce the administration’s commitment to prioritising and enhancing the tourism sector in the region.

Since February 2023, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has been consistently holding review meetings on tourism-related matters, all under the vigilant guidance of Chief Secretary Mr. Keshav Chandra. The overarching goal is to elevate tourism prospects and create a conducive environment for both tourists and stakeholders in the Union Territory.

The Tourism Department has formulated policies for diverse tourism activities, including Caravan Tourism, House Boat Tourism, Bird Watching, Beach Shacks, and Luxury Tents. These policies will soon be made available for public scrutiny and open for comments and suggestions from various government departments, tourism stakeholders, and the general public before they are formally approved and notified.

Furthermore, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration is diligently working on opening up new islands for tourism purposes. Notably, Cinque Island is under consideration to be made accessible to the general public and tourists for day tourism, adding a new dimension to the region’s tourism offerings.

Several other proposals were extensively deliberated upon during the review meeting. Notable among them are the pursuit of Blue Flag Certification for five selected beaches, the development of Inter Island Cruise Tourism, simplification of IV (Inner Line) Rules, relaxation of dry days, establishment of international air connectivity, and the enhancement of beach amenities and facilities.

Moreover, the administration is keen on improving transportation links within the islands. Plans are in motion to introduce sea plane connectivity to Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, and Long Island, with the goal of bolstering accessibility and tourism potential in these areas. Additionally, the authorities are working on enhancing facilities and amenities at various jetties and wharfs across the islands.
