In the aftermath of devastating fires that ravaged Port Blair on Diwali day, Vishal Jolly, National Executive Member of BJP and Former State President of BJP-ANI, has penned a letter to the Honourable Lt. Governor of A & N Islands. The letter appeals for urgent action in releasing funds to compensate the fire victims and organise essential arrangements for their temporary accommodation and rehabilitation.

Detailing the catastrophic events, Jolly highlighted the distressing incidents that unfolded on November 12, 2023. The inferno originated at Phoenix Bay, engulfing residences belonging to Mr. Sandeep Kapoor, Mr. Madan Pal Singh, and Ms. Susheela Devi. The blaze, which also engulfed surrounding buildings, caused extensive damage. Among the structures affected was an Air Condition repair shop, compounding the colossal losses incurred by the victims and inflicting severe mental trauma.

Before the shockwaves of the initial conflagration could settle, another destructive fire erupted at Dairy Farm Junction. This second fire consumed the entire business unit of Shivam Enterprises and Floor Mill, resulting in substantial losses for both entities and adjacent structures.

Reports indicated severe structural damage to Hotel ASM and Hotel MSM, their walls and AC units bearing the brunt of the fires, leading to significant infrastructure damage. Additionally, the devastating fires caused substantial material losses for all tenants occupying or operating businesses within these buildings.

The rapid succession of fires wreaked havoc, reducing 5-6 buildings to ashes and decimating properties estimated to be worth 3-5 crores. The aftermath has left victims grappling not just with financial ruin but also enduring profound mental and physical anguish.

Recognising the plight of those affected, Jolly urged the Honourable Lt. Governor to swiftly allocate ex-gratia relief funds to each victim. He stressed the critical need for immediate assessments to facilitate the disbursement of aid. Moreover, Jolly implored the authorities to orchestrate necessary arrangements for the temporary housing and rehabilitation of the affected individuals.

The disastrous fires have plunged the victims into an unprecedented crisis, necessitating urgent assistance both financially and emotionally to help them surmount this calamity. Jolly’s plea underscores the immediate need for compassionate action and support for those reeling from the traumatic aftermath of the fire disasters in Port Blair.
