Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the Member of Parliament representing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has put forward a proposal advocating for regularly organising cultural events in the remote islands of the UT of A & N Islands.
Citing the success of pre-pandemic events like the South Andaman Flea Market, which was efficiently managed by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma underscored the positive outcomes these events brought to the local community. They served as sources of entertainment, revenue generation, and drew significant tourism interest.
In a letter directed to the Chief Secretary, Sharma emphasised the recent revival of cultural events in Port Blair post the COVID-19 pandemic, including Flea Markets, Beach Festivals, and Musical Events. He urged for an extension of these festivities to remote islands, aiming to offer a platform for local artists while boosting the economic well-being of various social groups and Self-Help Groups.
“As Port Blair gears up for the forthcoming Island Tourism Festival and the ensuing dry season, I propose that cultural events be regularly organised in other prominent and remote islands,” Sharma expressed.
The proposal seeks to not only celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands but also aims to distribute the economic benefits across different communities. If implemented, these events could significantly contribute to fostering local talent and furthering the tourism sector in the region.
