Mr. D. Ayyappan, Secretary of the CPI (M) Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee, engaged in a crucial meeting with the Director of Shipping Services, A & N Islands. The primary agenda was a comprehensive discussion addressing pivotal concerns within the shipping sector.
During the meeting, Ayyappan fervently urged the Director of Shipping Services to bolster the fleet by acquiring more suitable vessels, specifically targeting the mainland-island and inter-island sectors. A critical aspect emphasised was the imminent necessity to procure additional cargo ships for the Andaman & Nicobar Administration. This proactive measure aimed to meet the islanders’ demands, especially if private cargo ships, with a proposed operational limit of 25 years, face prohibition from operating in Indian ports starting in 2026.
Highlighting the need for strategic planning, Ayyappan further pressed for the acquisition of more Sentinel-type vessels. These ships are deemed suitable for routes connecting Car Nicobar and the other islands within the southern cluster.
Acknowledging the steps taken by the Director of Shipping Services, particularly the proactive announcement of ship schedules one month in advance, Ayyappan emphasised the need to curtail voyage cancellations for enhanced service reliability.
The Director of Shipping Services exhibited receptiveness to the concerns raised during the discussion.
