The Andaman and Nicobar Police Department is intensifying efforts to enforce traffic rules and enhance awareness to ensure road safety across the islands. In the first 50 days of the year (01.01.2024 – 19.02.2024), the department has issued a staggering 6983 traffic challans, underscoring its commitment to maintaining strict adherence to traffic regulations and protecting citizens’ lives.
A total fine of Rs. 37,14,500/- (Rupees Thirty Seven Lakhs Fourteen Thousand Five Hundred) has been collected during this period, indicating the effectiveness of the department’s enforcement actions. In the South Andaman District alone, 5823 challans were issued, resulting in fines amounting to Rs. 31,07,500/- (Rupees Thirty One Lakhs Seven Thousand Five Hundred). Notably, this includes 260 cases of Drunk Driving and 16 instances of Dangerous Driving. In the North & Middle Andaman District, 938 challans were issued, with fines totalling Rs. 4,93,500/- (Rupees Four Lakhs Ninety Three Thousand Five Hundred), and 107 cases of Drunk Driving and 01 instance of Dangerous Driving were fined. Similarly, in the Nicobar District, 222 challans were issued, with fines amounting to Rs. 1,13,500/- (Rupees One Lakhs Thirteen Thousand Five Hundred).
Furthermore, the department has conducted 102 Traffic Awareness programmes across all three districts during this period. These programs, including 45 in South Andaman District, 32 in North & Middle Andaman District, and 25 in Nicobar District, aimed to educate the general public, students, and drivers about safe driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic rules.
