Some residents of Katchal Island recently wrote an email to the Director General of Police, Andaman and Nicobar Islands detailing the problems they are facing because of illegal sale of liquor.

The liquor that they are referring to is illicit liquor locally known as Jungli Daru and Handia.

According to the residents of Katchal Island, many families are facing issues because of the sale of illicit liquor. The sole bread earners of some families spend all their money on buying drinks for themselves and the sufferers are women and children.

Sources have informed us that a senior officer of A & N Police has been deputed to look into the menace of illegal liquor in Katchal and he is conducting an investigation in this regard.

Mobile Network in Katchal is down since several days and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get information out from the Island.

The problem reportedly is serious and according to the information obtained by Nicobar Times illicit liquor was being sold openly in the Island. The consumption of jaggery and sugar which are ingredients used for manufacturing the illicit liquor has also increased manifolds in the Island over the past few months.
