Govt. of India in the third phase of vaccination drive has allowed vaccines to be administered to those aged 18-44 years from May 1 2021. In the second phase of vaccination, citizens 45 years of age and above were allowed to get inoculated.

The Govt. of India has allowed states, private hospitals, industrial establishments etc. to procure vaccines directly from the manufacturers for implementing the third phase of vaccination drive.

Andaman and Nicobar Administration has ordered 3.6 lakh doses of COVISHIELD from Serum Institute of India, out of which 1 lakh doses of vaccines have been requested on immediate basis to start the vaccination drive for citizens in the age group of 18-44 years.

The vaccination drive for 18+ in the Islands will only be started after the vaccines are received from Serum Institute of India.

Doses of COVISHIELD currently available with Andaman and Nicobar Administration is specifically  meant for vaccinating those aged 45 years and above and cannot be used for vaccinating the citizens aged 18-44 years.

Sunil Kumar Singh, Secretary, IP&T while addressing a press conference informed scribes that, Andaman and Nicobar Administration will chalk out a plan for vaccinating the new age group as soon as the vaccines are received from Serum Institute of India.

  1. What does the administration mean by saying the existing stock of COVISHIELD is meant only for 45+? Are there different vaccines for different age groups?
