In a major move to enhance the nutritional security and livelihood of tribal communities, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), through the Government Poultry Farm, LFC, Dollygunj, distributed 100 Nicobari Grower Birds, aged 14 weeks, to the Aboriginal Tribes of Strait Island on 7th October 2025, under the Tribal Subsidy Scheme. The distribution was facilitated by the Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS).

The initiative seeks to promote Backyard Poultry Farming among tribal families, providing a sustainable source of protein through eggs and meat. The Nicobari poultry breed, well-adapted to the local tropical environment, is ideally suited to island conditions, ensuring both nutritional benefits and potential livelihood opportunities for the tribal population.

“The Department remains committed to supporting tribal welfare by improving nutrition and creating income-generating opportunities,” said a spokesperson from AH&VS. Similar initiatives are ongoing in other tribal areas to strengthen the nutritional and livelihood support system across the islands.
