The 10th Andaman & Nicobar State Conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) kicks off today at Sri Vijaya Puram, bringing together around 150 delegates and observers from across the Union Territory.

The conference opens this evening with a public session at Tiranga Park. A massive procession is scheduled to begin from Delanipur junction at 4 pm and converge at Tiranga Park by 4.45 pm, where Dr. K. Hemalata, All India President of CITU, will inaugurate the session.

The Delegate Session will continue tomorrow, December 21, at 9.30 am at Kerala Samajam Hall, Phoenix Bay. The venue has been named after late Basudeb Acharia, former All India Vice President of CITU, while the conference stage has been dedicated to late M. Boominathan, a former CITU leader in the islands.

During the Delegate Session, the General Secretary of the State Committee will present a report on CITU’s functioning over the past three years, followed by the Treasurer’s audited accounts. Delegates are expected to deliberate on organisational performance, financial matters and key concerns of the working class.

The two-day event will also discuss major labour demands, adopt resolutions and elect a new State Committee of the CITU.

The State Conference is being held three years after the previous session in November 2022. Dr. Hemalata arrives in Sri Vijaya Puram today from the mainland to attend the proceedings.
