A 13-year-old girl, a Grade 9 student, from a remote North Andaman village under Diglipur Tehsil and Kalighat Police Station was raped and murdered in her village on June 12, 2024.
Sources informed us that the sexual exploitation of the girl was reported in the post-mortem conducted on June 13, 2024.
Sources also informed us that the police suspected a 23-year-old neighbour to be the culprit, as he went missing days after the rape and murder came to light.
Police, along with a team of forest officials, were reportedly looking for the suspect in the nearby forests after he went missing. The dead body of the suspect was found on June 16, 2024. The suspect had committed suicide by hanging himself.
Sources also informed us that the suspect, who later committed suicide, was initially very involved in helping the police, family members and the villagers during the initial search and other formalities. Some sources also informed that he was the first one to sight the dead body near a stream in the village.
