In a significant achievement for veterinary care in the region, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services successfully performed a Rumenotomy on a cow at the field level on 5th February 2025. The procedure, carried out at Garacharma Veterinary Hospital, highlights the critical issue of animals ingesting harmful waste materials.
The cow was initially brought to the hospital with symptoms of anorexia. Upon examination, veterinarians diagnosed ruminal impaction, a condition where the rumen (the largest stomach compartment in ruminants) becomes blocked. To address the issue, a surgical procedure known as Rumenotomy was performed under paravertebral anesthesia.
During the surgery, approximately 15 kilograms of plastic waste and several metallic foreign bodies were removed from the cow’s stomach. The operation was led by Dr. Harsha G.V, with assistance from the para-veterinary staff at Garacharma Veterinary Hospital. The successful intervention has not only saved the animal’s life but also underscored the growing problem of waste consumption by livestock.
In light of the incident, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services has issued a strong advisory to livestock owners, urging them to prevent their animals from consuming waste materials. Additionally, the general public has been called upon to dispose of waste responsibly to protect animal health and well-being.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by improper waste disposal and its impact on both animal and environmental health.
