The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is set to launch the 31st round of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination for bovines from June 2, 2025, under the National Animal Disease Control Program (NADCP).
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and pigs. The disease significantly impacts milk production and causes substantial economic losses, especially for livestock-rearing farmers. To curb its spread and move towards eradication, routine mass vaccination of cattle and buffalo is carried out under the centrally sponsored flagship scheme.
In preparation for the upcoming round of vaccination, the department organized a mass awareness campaign and interactive session on May 24, 2025, at the Animal Husbandry Training Institute (AHTI), Livestock Farm Complex, Dollygunj. The session aimed to educate farmers about the importance of FMD vaccination and encourage full participation.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) emphasized the critical need for 100 percent vaccination coverage of cattle and buffalo to effectively combat the disease. He also encouraged farmers to ensure their animals are dewormed and tagged, which are essential steps in disease control.
The Director addressed common myths and misconceptions related to the FMD vaccine and reassured farmers of its safety and efficacy. He also took time to respond to their queries and concerns.
Senior Veterinary Officers (SVOs) from Garacharma, Extension & Publicity, LFC Dollygunj, Cattle Holding Farm, and the RP Unit also spoke on the occasion. They highlighted the importance of scientific management of dairy cattle and buffalo, including proper nutrition and fodder conservation techniques such as silage making. Prepared silage was distributed among farmers as part of the awareness initiative.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by the SVO, AHTI, Dollygunj. Farmers in attendance expressed appreciation for the informative program and requested similar sessions on other relevant topics in the future. (Story Based on PR)
